Victory for two species of salamander
We won a victory for two salamander species that live in the old-growth forests of California and Oregon.
We won a victory for two salamander species that live in the old-growth forests of California and Oregon. A federal judge ruled in January that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service illegally rejected a petition by environmentalists to give protected status to two salamander species that live in old growth forests in California and Oregon. U.S. District Judge William Alsup ordered the agency to consider listing the Siskiyou Mountains and Scott Bar salamanders as threatened or endangered species. If granted protected status under the Endangered Species Act, agencies would be required to ensure that forest activities, such as logging operations, do not harm the salamanders or their habitat.
On March 29, 2007, a positive finding was published in the Federal Register, triggering a nine month status review and public comment period. Comments are due by May 29, 2007.
